That means using established active ingredients where they make sense, supporting them with the components needed for a stable and effective formula, and avoiding unnecessary additions wherever possible.

Purposeful Formulation

Not every ingredient in skincare is an active ingredient — nor should it be.

A well-built formula also needs ingredients that hydrate, stabilize, preserve, emulsify, cleanse, condition, or help active ingredients perform properly.

Our standard isn't “Is this ingredient natural?” ... It's “Why is this ingredient here?”. If it serves the formula or the skin, it earns its place.

I - CLEANSE

Remove what doesn't belong.

Cleansing is the foundation of the routine, but clean skin shouldn't feel stripped. The first pillar combines a multi-surfactant cleansing system with humectants, conditioning ingredients, and botanical extracts to remove daily buildup while preparing the skin for the steps that follow.

ROLE — Hydration / Skin Conditioning

Aloe helps provide hydration and conditioning while the skin is being cleansed.

Why we selected it:
Cleansing should remove what doesn't belong without treating moisture as collateral damage. Aloe gives the formula a hydrating, skin-conditioning component alongside its cleansing system.

Centella Asiatica Extract
ROLE — Skin Conditioning / Support

Centella asiatica is a botanical ingredient commonly used in skincare formulations designed to condition and support the appearance of healthy skin.

Why we selected it:
A cleanser is used every day, often twice a day. We wanted the first step of the routine to do more than simply remove oil and debris, so the cleansing system is supported by ingredients chosen with skin comfort in mind.

Glycerin + Sodium PCA
ROLE — Humectants / Hydration

Glycerin and sodium PCA are humectants that help attract and retain water within the skin's outermost layers.

Why we selected them:
Effective cleansing and hydration don't have to work against each other. These ingredients help support moisture while the surfactant system does its job.

Multi-Surfactant Cleansing System
ROLE — Cleansing

The formula combines Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate, Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate.

Together, these ingredients create the cleansing system responsible for lifting away oil, sunscreen, sweat, and daily buildup.

Why we selected it:
Rather than making one ingredient do all of the work, the formula uses a complementary blend of cleansing agents. The goal is straightforward: cleanse thoroughly while maintaining the restrained formulation philosophy behind the Four Pillars.

Botanical Extract Complex
ROLE — Skin Conditioning

Centella Asiatica, Equisetum Arvense, Geranium Maculatum, and Taraxacum Officinale Leaf Extract complement the functional cleansing ingredients with additional botanical skin-conditioning components.

Why we selected it:
NOVUM isn't interested in choosing between botanicals and cosmetic science. When a botanical ingredient serves the formula, it earns its place alongside the functional ingredients that make the product perform.

Balance is the toner step of the Four Pillars.

Used after cleansing, it helps remove the last traces of residue, delivers lightweight hydration and skin-conditioning ingredients, and prepares the skin for the treatment and moisturizer that follow.

Its formula combines marine botanicals, humectants, aloe, and botanical waters to create a functional bridge between cleansing and active treatment.

ROLE — Skin Conditioning / Hydration Support

Balance contains Chondrus Crispus Extract and Macrocystis Pyrifera (Kelp) Extract — two marine-derived ingredients used for their skin-conditioning properties.

Why we selected it:
A toner should do more than simply refresh the skin. These marine extracts help give Balance a distinct conditioning and hydration-supporting role within the routine.

Glycerin + Panthenol
ROLE — Hydration / Moisture Support

Glycerin helps attract and retain water in the skin's outer layers, while panthenol supports hydration and skin conditioning.

Why we selected them:
Toning should prepare the skin, not leave it feeling depleted. These ingredients help make hydration part of the toning step itself.

Rose Water + Witch Hazel Water
ROLE — Toning / Botanical Conditioning

Rosa Damascena Flower Water and Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water form part of the toner’s botanical base.

Why we selected them:
They support the traditional toning function of the formula while fitting NOVUM’s broader approach: use botanicals where they contribute, not simply because they sound natural.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
ROLE — Skin Conditioning

Aloe contributes lightweight hydration and conditioning to the formula.

Why we selected it:
Balance sits between cleansing and treatment, so the formula needed ingredients that support comfort while preparing the skin for what comes next.

Renew is the active treatment step of the Four Pillars.

At its center is retinol — a well-established vitamin A derivative used to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and tone over time.

But the formula isn't built around retinol alone.

Renew pairs its active treatment with humectants, botanical extracts, emollient oils, and antioxidant support to create a more considered approach to nightly skin renewal.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative widely used in skincare to support cellular turnover and improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and skin tone with consistent use.

Why we selected it:
NOVUM wasn't created to avoid powerful ingredients. It was created to use them deliberately.

Retinol gives Renew a clear purpose within the Four Pillars: this is the step designed to actively improve the appearance of the skin over time rather than simply cleanse or moisturize it.

Glycerin + Aloe Vera
ROLE — Hydration / Skin Conditioning

Glycerin helps attract and retain water in the skin's outer layers, while Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice contributes additional hydration and conditioning.

Why we selected them:
An active treatment doesn't need to ignore hydration. These ingredients help support the skin while retinol performs the treatment role of the formula.

Centella Asiatica + Green Tea Extract
ROLE — Skin Conditioning / Antioxidant Support

Centella Asiatica and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract are botanical ingredients commonly used for their skin-conditioning and antioxidant properties.

Why we selected them:
Renew is intentionally not a retinol-only formula. These botanicals complement the treatment step with ingredients selected to support the overall condition and appearance of the skin.

Jojoba Oil + Wheat Germ Oil
ROLE — Emollients / Moisture Support

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil and Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil provide emollient components that help soften the skin and support moisture retention.

Why we selected them:
Retinol is the treatment, but the surrounding formula still matters. These oils help give Renew a more balanced base rather than building the serum around the active ingredient alone.

Tocopheryl Acetate

Tocopheryl Acetate is a form of vitamin E commonly used in skincare for its antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties.

Why we selected it:
Renew combines its primary active with supporting ingredients that contribute to the overall function and stability of the formula. Vitamin E complements the treatment-focused nature of the serum without competing with retinol's central role.

Botanical Conditioning Complex
ROLE — Skin Conditioning

The formula also includes Propolis Extract, Equisetum Arvense Extract, Geranium Maculatum Extract, Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Root Extract, and Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide.

Why we selected it:
These ingredients support the wider formulation rather than serving as the headline. That's intentional: NOVUM uses botanicals where they contribute, while allowing the clinically established active to remain the center of the treatment step.

Restore is the moisturizer step of the Four Pillars.

Its job is to replenish hydration, soften the skin, support moisture retention, and finish the routine with ingredients selected to help maintain a comfortable, conditioned skin barrier.

The formula combines humectants, emollient oils and butters, amino acids, botanical extracts, and peptides to create a moisturizer designed to support the skin after cleansing, toning, and treatment.

Why we selected them:

Jojoba Oil + Sunflower Seed Oil + Shea Butter
ROLE — Emollients / Moisture Retention

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, and Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter provide emollient components that help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.

Why we selected them:
A moisturizer needs more than water-binding ingredients. Restore combines humectants with emollients so the formula can both attract moisture and help keep the skin feeling conditioned afterward.

Palmitoyl Peptide Complex
ROLE — Skin Conditioning / Appearance Support

Restore contains Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1.

These cosmetic peptides are used in skincare formulations designed to support the appearance of smoother, more conditioned skin.

Why we selected them:
Restore is the final step of the routine, but that doesn't mean it needs to be passive. The peptide complex gives the moisturizer an additional skin-conditioning role beyond basic hydration.
